My series of Off-Roading Tips continues with today's theme being mud. I really don't like wheelin' in the mud... but I like to run in it.
I ran the Warrior Dash last year. A 5K muddy obstacle course. I will be running another mud run in just three weeks -- The Mudderella --
But running my Jeep through the mud... Nope -- not tops on my list.
Last summer I had the opportunity to run through a little bit of mud at Nemacolin Resort. -- Nemacolin Blog Post -- It was fun, but not something I plan on doing again. But you never know what you will encounter out on the trails. So you should always be prepared.
Most of the same tips I gave last week with water should pretty much be the same for mud... Water Tips Blog Post
Mud can be a fun challenge on an off road trail, but you need to be cautious so you don't damage your Jeep. Just like water mud can sometimes take us by surprise with the hidden debris that lurks in the mud. Plus, the depth of the mud can be hard to judge.
So here are some tips for driving your Jeep through the mud...
--Like with all off-roading take your recovery equipment
--Don't go alone, take another vehicle that can pull you out
--Don't cross the mud if there are not tracks on the other side
--Avoid excessively spinning the tires
--Keep moving
--Beware of the middle of deep ruts where you could high center
--If you start to get bogged down, slightly turn your steering wheel from side to side to gain more traction while continuing to move forward
--Pressure wash the undercarriage when you get back. This helps prevent corrosion and excess weight on your Jeep.

TIPS FROM FELLOW JEEPERS
-- Air down your tires for extra traction and flotation.
--Don't be afraid to get dirty yourself. When you're stuck in mud sometimes you have to get out of your jeep.
-- you need to take your shoes off and get a stick and go exploring before you cross.
--Avoid it if you can! LOL. If you haven't been through a specific spot before, stop and try to check out deep it is. Go around "holes" if you can. Make sure another vehicle is in front or behind you, with good tow points and/or a winch handy. If in doubt, go ahead and hook up your tow strap ahead of time (d-rings FTW) so you don't have to dig around in the muck if you get stuck. Once you start in, don't stop - that's a sure fire way to get stuck. Work the steering wheel back and forth a bit if you feel like you're starting to get stuck.
-- Important to wash off radiator, AC Coil and Trans cooler coil. Softly get the mud off without bending the cooling fins, otherwise trans will run hot. You can get mesh inserts if you run the mud a lot.
